Alchemy is the science of understanding the structure of matter, breaking it down, and reconstructing it as something else. There is a law to this art that all alchemists abide by: to obtain, something of equal value must be lost. Everything comes with a price.
Edward and Alphonse Elric thought there was nothing more they could lose when they broke the ultimate taboo and tried to resurrect their dead mother with alchemy. But they were wrong.
